Kai Havertz upset: Arteta explains the reaction

Arteta offered a clear assessment of Havertz’s mood in his pre-match press conference. “He’s so competitive, Kai,” Arteta said. “He came in against Lille, he made a massive impact, you could see it straight away what he did on the pitch. He left the pitch and he was so upset that he didn’t score a goal. He was happy to help the team, but he was so upset. That’s the Kai that we want, the guy that wants to evolve and improve every single day. He loves the game, he loves to learn, he loves to feel important. He loves to feel that he can help other players as well.”

The manager’s comments underline Havertz’s importance to Arsenal’s plans this season. Arteta also highlighted the midfielder’s return to form after a lengthy injury layoff last season, noting how quickly he has regained fitness and settled back into his best levels since recovering fully.

Performance and context

Havertz delivered a standout display against Lille, even though he did not find the net. Arteta’s remark that Havertz was “so upset” at missing a goal reflects a player who evaluates his contribution not only by goal tally but also by his overall influence on the match. Arsenal have rallied from their pre-break setback with victories over Leeds and Lille, providing momentum ahead of their upcoming clash with Nottingham Forest.

The remarks reinforce Havertz’s status within the squad as a player committed to daily improvement and to playing a central role for the team. Arteta’s praise also serves to reassure supporters that Havertz’s attitude and fitness are positives as Arsenal balance domestic and European commitments.

Why the reaction matters for Arsenal

A visibly disappointed response to a win highlights Havertz’s high standards and ambition. A hungry Havertz can be a valuable asset for Arsenal as they navigate a congested schedule and seek goals across multiple competitions. Arteta’s public support, paired with Havertz’s evident drive following his return from injury, suggests the manager expects him to play a meaningful role in upcoming key matches.

Arteta’s comments also emphasize a blend of individual ambition and team focus, portraying Havertz as someone who wants to contribute both by scoring and by helping teammates. That balance is part of why the manager values his contribution this season.

What Happens Next

Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday. Havertz’s recent form and determined reaction after the Lille performance make him a player to watch as Arsenal strive to sustain momentum in both domestic and European competition.
